Attorney and Past Commodore Joseph A. Tringali discusses your Right to Choose or Refuse Members. This course examines recent developments in the ever-evolving law of discrimination and the rights of members of a private club to freely associate. A thorough understanding of the differences between “private clubs” and “private accommodations” is a ‘must know’ for every yacht club officer and professional.
Can you lose your tax-exempt status? Tax expert Mitchell Stump, CPA, explains how ignorance of recent changes in the IRS code could very well spell death for your club. This course explores the inner workings of the tax code and tells you how to avoid problems before they occur.
Attorney and Commodore Joseph R. Fields, Jr., explains the impact of the American with Disabilities Act on your club. This far-reaching legislation has affected many clubs and businesses. Learn about the A.D.A. and other legislation that affects your club and prevent problems before they occur.
This course covers the many facets of liability and how incidents can be avoided or at least minimized using defensive forethought. Your club doesn’t have to live in a glass house, but you need to know where the rocks are –and who is likely to throw them–in order to protect yourself and your club.
Who is Robert and Why Should I Care? This brief presentation explains why Robert’s Rules are more than a mere formality. Properly held meetings are important not only for the health of the club, but because of their impact on individual legal liability of officers and directors. The presentation covers the development of parliamentary law and the most important things a presiding officer needs to know about running a meeting.
The Academy Hurricane and Storm Preparedness program tells you how to protect your club, your boat, and your life in the face of an approaching weather event. This course was developed by Philip Bouckaert, a qualified communications “watchstander” on duty at Coast Guard Station Lake Worth Inlet since April 1997. Phil received a “Real Heroes” award in 2002 from the Palm Beach Red Cross for his rescue of an aircraft which lost all electrical power. This course also teaches what to do after the storm passes and how to get up and running safely in the shortest possible time.
This course discusses the special laws and liability problems that relate to children in and around the club. Child abuse is a subject that has become a regular feature of the evening news, and Florida has taken the lead in passing legislation to protect children from predators who come in the guise of teachers, mentors and camp counselors. If your club welcomes children for any event, you NEED to be aware of these laws!
This course is approved for 5.0 hours CLE credits by The Florida Bar–General; Intermediate Level
